About Us

The Funky Sole Line Dance Club is run by award winning Line dance Instructor & International Choreographer Karl Harry Winson (D&G Qualified Instructor) along with his dance team Donna and Jo. Based in Bournemouth and covering the south coast in areas such as Poole, Wimborne, Ringwood and Verwood, Funky Sole caters to all ages and abilities and encourages anyone and everyone to give Modern Line Dance a try. Line dance is what it says it is, you dance in lines. It is a solo dance style in which you don't need a partner, just yourself and a pair of comfortable shoes and clothing. Over the past 30 years Line Dance has evolved massively  and as a club we have also. We use different music genres such as Pop, Rock n' Roll and Irish (plus many more) but this doesn't mean to say we don't still love our Country music.

We organise regular dance events, weekends away and local socials inviting International Choreographers to join us and award winning artists to perform for us. Beside our own events, we also take bookings for private functions, parties and weddings. If you would like us for your event please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Our History

Funky Sole originally started as Marshal's Line dancers and was run by instructor Roger Swansbrough over 20 years ago. The first Marshals class was started at Hillbourne Community Centre in Poole next to Marshal Rd, hence the name, Marshals. One class grew to many and his club expanded to cover the majority of Bournemouth and Poole with a reliable team behind him. Organising Line dance weekends away, running monthly socials and having packed classes, Marshals was a great place to meet friends, have the best social life and learn Line dancing at it's best.

Unfortunately in 2006 an accident left Roger wheelchair bound which meant he had to then rely on his trusty team to cover his classes and run his business. For someone whose life was dancing, moving around and using his legs, this was an absolute tragedy. After almost a year Roger unfortunately passed away.

A small while later, 16 year old Karl started taking Roger's classes, teaching new dances and more importantly pushing for new people to come and join our club and re-creating that atmosphere and social life that Roger once created himself. As they say, the rest is history the club now runs under the name Funky Sole and a club we hope Roger would be proud of.
